`Skins
over Tigers at home
Back home
in Langhorne after road trips to Germantown and then
Abington, the Redskins looked to clear out any sluggishness
from the battle with the Ghosts last week. And playing an
always tough Harry S. Truman club in game two of its SOL
schedule, a nice crowd of loyal fans was on hand to see the
Tribe right the ship. So with that said, let’s get down to
the action on the field.
With the failed comeback seemingly still on their minds the
first-quarter went by quickly, and just as well, as the
Moleskinners looked as if the past, rather than the future,
was the focus. For although charging right down the field on
the first drive, a Blue and Red pass was picked in the end
zone and that clearly set the mood for the Indians. In fact,
with turnovers plaguing the offense, Neshaminy failed to
score a point in the first 12 minutes; however, Truman
mirrored the home team effort and the score was 0-0 as the
teams changed ends.
Rolling to the second-quarter, the ‘Skins finally shook off
their lethargy as Charlie Marterella engineered a drive that
culminated in six-points when he found Dylan Lange for a
28-yarder via the airlanes. With Ricky Domico on the money,
it went to 7-0 for the Creek Kids at just about nine minutes
left to go in the first half. Then after a few more
exchanges of control, it was Bryan Dean busting one off on a
38-yard scamper that put the ‘Skins up 14-0 following
another Domico PAT. With Truman back in control as the clock
was spinning, that Black and Gold effort ended on an
incomplete pass as the gun sounded the arrival of halftime.
With Neshaminy kicking off to the Tigers to start the
third-quarter, the visitors set up inside their own 20.
Stitching together a nice move, Truman had it out to
mid-field before they lost the handle on the pill with Andy
Lynch covering it back at the Tiger 39. And then not much
later, it was Brian Titus nailing Shane Quinn on a ten-yard
scoring strike. With Domico in the groove, the score then
went to 21-0 for the Warriors.
After the kick, it was Truman then on offense at their 25.
And showing they meant business, they drove 70 yards down
the field before they came up short on fourth down and goal
to go. But with turnovers still seemingly the order of the
day, the first play from scrimmage for our guys saw the
third ‘Skins fumble of the night giving Truman another shot
with a first and goal at the seven.
From there Neshaminy’s defense heroically refused to budge
as on four more efforts Truman was once again stopped cold.
And giving credit where credit is due, Kevin Magee was
notable on those successive stands as he logged more than a
few big plays to keep the Tigers from scoring. Then with the
ball going back to the Schmidtmen, Dean decided to end the
suspense as he quickly went the distance on a 75-yard sprint
that saw the scoreboard go to 28-0 after the Domico
conversion.
With a good bit of time still remaining in the final
quarter, the Tigers didn’t quit as they finally punched one
in with under a minute to go. Showing plenty of grit, they
also went for two and pegged it to make it 28-8 before
trying the onsides kick. Not successful, though, it was
Titus and company that then came in and grabbed a knee to
burn the clock to zero.
And so we’re happy to report: Game to ‘Skins!
Now at 4-1 overall, the Redskins have evened their SOL
record at 1-1 as they have put the train back on the track.
Still, you’d be hard pressed to find a great deal to cheer
about this contest with the five giveaways a curiosity
considering the shut out for almost the entire game. Be that
as it may, next week sees our grid gang back on the bus as
they travel to Warminster to take on the William Tennent
Panthers.
See you at the game.
Game
captains: Brian Titus, Bryan Dean, Stephen Stemme, Ryan
Katona.
