Neshaminy 7 -
Souderton 18
LANGHORNE: Finally – we’re back home at “The Ridge” for the
first home game of the 2012 campaign. Hard to believe that
it’s been ten months since the Creek Kids last played on
their own turf. Just check the records and you’ll see it was
October 21st of last year when Neshaminy was at home. But
with the wait now over, all of us fans couldn’t be more
excited about tonight’s contest here in “Harry’s House”. And
making it extra special is not only the opponent - the
always tough Indians of Souderton - but the induction of the
latest group of “Hall of Fame” players during the halftime
of the game. So here we go!
With the coin toss going their way, the Schmidtmen took the
kickoff with Devon Brown returning it to the 22. Then it was
Hugh Hart immediately breaking one loose as he took the rock
60 yards to the Indians’ 20. But although looking like a
promising opening possession, a Hart aerial was picked with
Souderton starting on its ten. And in something not seen
this year, it was the visitors breaking a long run to the
Redskins’ ten with a touchdown following in short order.
With the PAT blocked, it was 6-0 for Souderton.
After the kick Neshaminy was back on offense and set up at
its 33. Not earning a first, the ‘Skins punted and after the
catch it was Souderton opening up at its 45. And in a repeat
of their first possession, another Indians’ running back
broke one for 50 yards and six points. A two-point try
failed with the scoreboard locked at 12-0 for the Indians.
Justin Andrews then perked up the home crowd with a nice
return of the kickoff as he gave Neshaminy a first at
mid-field. But with a fumble by a Redskin back, Souderton’s
offense was soon on the field. With the visitors going
nowhere, the ‘Skins gained the ball back at the Indian 45.
Still looking stale on offense, the Blue & Red booted it
away and it was the Souderton offense coming back as they
started on their ten.
From there it was some sloppy play and scrum type ball that
had the ball being traded back and forth between the teams.
Eventually the Indians ended up with the ball at their 43,
with the second-quarter well underway, and the score still
12-0. Pushing back, Neshaminy’s defense stopped that Indian
effort around its 20. But with the Redskins still stalling
out, another punt soon followed. Catching a break on a nice
kick and roll it was then Souderton beginning at its 22;
however, with a pattern beginning to develop, Souderton
worked its way back down the field for another score. A
bright spot was another missed PAT which kept it at 18-0.
Tosh Thompson then took the squibbed kickoff and after the
return, it was Neshaminy starting on its 42. No dice,
though, for any more offense by either squad and it was just
a few more punts eating up the clock before the gun sounded
that the half had arrived as the teams packed it in for the
break.
Souderton received the kickoff to start the second-half.
Eating up five minutes, the Indian drive eventually came to
a stop with a punt giving Neshaminy a first down at the ten.
Blake “The Bull” Sullivan then pushed it up the middle to
the 22 for some breathing room. With Andrews on short gain
it was The Bull grabbing big yards to the Souderton side of
the field. Nate Hall then added some grass before Denny Lord
showed some legwork as he pushed it down to the Souderton
30. Going to a 4th and two, the ‘Skins came up short as the
ball went back to Souderton.
Burning the clock, the fourth-quarter rolled around with the
Indians still holding the ball. And looking like it was late
in the second-quarter, the game devolved into a pushing
match for the next six minutes before Neshaminy came alive
on one of its possessions as Andrews nabbed two straight
passes including one for a score. With the PAT good it went
to 18-7 with 5:49 remaining. Trying for the on-sides kick,
it was Souderton coming up with the ball. And with the
Indians controlling the clock from there, it wasn’t long
before it was over.
In a tough opener for Neshaminy, Souderton showed they came
to play ball. They’re always a tough-out and congratulations
are due them tonight. As to our guys, there are some rough
spots to be worked out but plenty of games and football
remaining in the 2012 season so we’ll look for them to
bounce back next week against William Tennent.
Congratulations also to the six former players who were
added to the “Hall of Fame” including Jamar Brittingham,
Chris Vincent, Jason Bowman, Bill Schmitt, Jason Delp and
Joel Greytok.
See you at the game!
